Why I Retained Water Before Competition — And How I Fixed It

I experienced water retention before competition even though my prep was perfectly dialled in. Everything was controlled: calories, sodium, water intake, training, posing, and sleep. Yet 48 hours before stepping on stage, my physique suddenly looked softer, less defined, and visibly watery. That moment taught me one of the most important lessons of my bodybuilding career.

What Causes Water Retention Before Competition

Even a flawless peak week can be disrupted by small triggers. The body becomes extremely sensitive to stress, digestion, caffeine, and sleep. In my case, the cause was something so simple that I didn’t recognise it at first — but the impact was immediate.

My Prep Mistake: Coffee on an Empty Stomach

On the morning before the show, I drank my usual black coffee… but without eating anything first.

Here’s why that was a problem:

  • caffeine on an empty stomach spikes cortisol,

  • high cortisol increases water retention,

  • digestion slows down,

  • fluid balance becomes unstable,

  • the body holds onto water as a protective response.

This wasn’t about sodium, carbs, or water intake. It was purely hormonal — a stress response amplified by peak‑week sensitivity.

Cortisol, Stress & Water Retention

When cortisol rises, the body shifts into “fight or flight.” This means:

  • digestion becomes less efficient,

  • the body retains water around the midsection and lower back,

  • definition becomes blurred,

  • peak‑week dryness disappears.

This is exactly what happened to me. My body wasn’t “off.” It was stressed.

How I Reduced Water Retention Before Stage

The key was staying calm and acting fast. Here’s what I did:

  • ate a small meal to stabilise digestion,

  • skipped caffeine for the rest of the day,

  • drank water normally (no cutting),

  • kept sodium consistent,

  • avoided unnecessary movement,

  • focused on breathing and lowering stress.

Within a few hours, my physique started tightening up again. By the next morning, I was dry, sharp, and ready.

What You Can Learn From My Experience

Peak week is not just about carbs, sodium, and water. It’s about stress management.

Here are the biggest takeaways:

  • don’t drink coffee on an empty stomach during peak week,

  • keep cortisol low,

  • avoid rushing or panicking,

  • stay consistent with water and sodium,

  • trust your prep.

Final Thoughts

Water retention before competition can happen to anyone — even when everything is perfect. The key is understanding your body, staying calm, and reacting strategically instead of emotionally. This experience made me a better athlete and a better coach.
